Food intake is assessed by the size of the portion, yet a fast food meal contains many more calories than a similar sized portion of a healthy meal. The conclusion is we are all being fooled into eating too much food.

5. People get fat eating regular portion sizes, but since the food has a high energy density, people gain weight. In evolutionary terms, the human appetite was designed for low energy density foods. In other parts of the world where these foods are still the dietary staples, obesity is virtually non existent. Our bodies were never designed to cope with the high energy dense foods consumed in the West. That is a major reason why fast food in contributing to the major rise in obesity.

6. Another fact is that fast food may speed up people’s risk of clogged arteries that can lead to heart attacks. Researchers at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Francisco have demonstrated that a certain type of fat, called oxidized fat, can accelerate the buildup of plaque in arteries. And many types of fast food such as hamburgers, pizza and French fries are loaded with oxidized fat. The conclusion is fast food meals are high in saturated fat and low quality carbohydrates, white bread and lots of soda. Our bodies require fiber and more healthful types of fats. Fast food represents a dietary pattern that is the opposite of what is recommended for a healthy body.

Does anyone know where I can buy Diotomaceous earth in the downtown Toronto area?

Hi everyone. I am searching for diotomaceous earth. It is used as a bug control product, but is green/health based (no chemicals). I found a flea on my Yorkie the other day and I’m panicking. I work in the downtown core of Toronto (york/king) and am hoping someone knows somewhere within walking distance of here that sells this stuff. Or, in the durham region (i live in Courtice, just east of Oshawa). I can’t seem to find it anywhere.

Okay well first off avoid the pool grade diotomaceous earth. It is different from the animal grade and is not safe for animals. So you can’t go shopping at a hard ware store. I regularly use diotomaceous earth to control insects on my chickens. It works great. I usually order on line from here:

Has anyone noticed the disturbing message on Coke products?

Diet Coke and other Coke products are claiming on their products that soda is as “hydrating” as other beverages and water. Its as if they are trying to clean up soda’s image, and make it a health product. I think that its false advertising and a cheap stunt for Coca-Cola in a industry where Coke is no longer king. Just look in your beverage aisle, its a lot more diverse now, and people are drinking less soda. Either way, its wrong and deceiving.

Although I am also dismayed by this message, it is not actually false advertising. Soda is indeed as hydrating as other beverages. Because this is not a lie, it has a right to be on the label. The choice to omit all of the other information about soda (the empty calories, the leeching of calcium out of the bone marrow, the carcinogenic sweeteners) is exactly that: a CHOICE that the company is perfectly allowed to make. It might not be ethical, but it’s legal, and we can’t do anything about it.
