Sondek LP12 Upgrades and Service
The Linn Sondek LP12 was designed and built by Ivor Tifenbrun in Glasgow, Scotland. This   picture   is   from   my   first   Linn   Sondek   LP12   around   1987.     A   friend   of   mine   (also   John)   had   recently   bought   a   CD player,   as   this   was   the   in   thing   at   the   time.         He   told   me   that   my   Sondek   was   outdated   and   did   not   sound   as   good   as his   new   CD   player.   I   challenged   him   to   bring   his   player   and   some   CD’s   to   my   house   so   that   we   could   do   a   direct AB     comparison. I invited a number of our friends for an afternoon of music. In terms of sound quality, all voted for the Sondek, except for John!

Bring the magic of music into your home
There   was   an   upgrade   done   to   my   LP12   prior   to   this   experiment,   so   I   used   most   of   the   old   parts   to   make   up   a   look   alike   Linn   Turntable. A   few   weeks later   we   set   the   “Linn”   in   the   garden   and   placed   the   cross   and   flowers   in   place,   and   arranged   for   a   get   together   with   those   same   friends.   After   some time,   John   noticed   something   in   the   far   corner   of   the   garden   and   walked   over   to   see   what   it   was.   When   he   was   a   few   paces   away   from   the   “dead   and buried” Linn, he turned and walking back toward us, said out loudly…………“ Yes, that’s exactly where it belongs
Don’t   tell   John,   but   about   10   years   later,   I   sold   my   beloved   LP12,   moving to CD’s and DVD’s. In hindsight, I went from great stereo music, to terrible surround sound! In   2012   I   bought   another   LP12   with   an   Akito   tonearm   and   Grado   Gold cartridge. The serial number is 35600 and was most likely built in 1983 It   has   been   through   a   number   of   alterations   and   upgrades   and   I’m   not   sure if it will ever be done! Over   the   years,   I   went   through   a   number   of   5.1   and   7.1   processors,   but eventually   settled   with   my   Rotel   RSX1065.   The   1065   is   a   5.1   channel processor,   but   has   a   wonderful   sound.   I   use   it   in   surround   for   movies   and        stereo for music.

If two speakers are inphase, the sound waves they produce push & pull air together.  This results in a stronger, more focused sound with proper bass.
